Assoc. Prof. Fabio Gsaller

During my PhD studies in Molecular Biology at the Medical University of Innsbruck, I conducted research on virulence factors in the human mould pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. After completing my studies, I joined the Manchester Fungal Infection Group as a postdoc, where I gained valuable experience in Antifungal Drug Discovery and Resistance research with a focus on transcriptional regulation-based mechanisms that confer resistance to azoles and 5-flucytosine. With the support of a postdoctoral fellowship, I moved back to Innsbruck and established my current research group, 'Antifungal Therapeutics and Resistance' at the Medical University.

Abstract:

Both olorofim and 5-fluorocytosine (5FC) are antifungals associated with pyrimidine metabolism. The initial part of my presentation will focus on the anti-Aspergillus activity of olorofim at early-stage growth. The second part will examine mechanisms that contribute to intrinsic 5FC resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus, including the efflux of cytotoxic 5FC derivatives.
