Dr. Agustín Resendiz Sharpe currently holds a postdoctoral position at KU Leuven, Belgium, working in the laboratory of Prof. Greetje Vande Velde. Agustín earned his Bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery from Universidad Anáhuac in Mexico City. His medical career encompasses a Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship, also in México City. In addition to this, he immersed himself in the field of research, culminating in the completion of a Research Master in Infection and Immunity from Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. This was followed by the attainment of a doctoral degree at KU Leuven University, where he concentrated on the study of triazole-resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus. Currently, his research endeavours are centered around the investigation of mixed triazole-resistant and susceptible Aspergillus fumigatus infections, mucormycosis infections, and the exploration of novel therapeutic approaches.
Coexisting triazole-susceptible and triazole-resistant A. fumigatus in the environment raise concerns about mixed infections in patients. Yet, inadequate research tools have restricted their understanding. Hence, we introduce innovative in vitro and in vivo (Galleria mellonella) A. fumigatus mixed models featuring bioluminescence-imaging and qPCR that effectively distinguish wild-type from triazole-resistant strains.
