Dr. Cogliati’s research activity focuses on molecular epidemiology of Cryptococcus, Candida, Aspergillus, Fusarium, Zygomycetes, and dermatophytes, and his research group is a reference for medical mycology in Italy. He is an expert in Cryptococcus and, from 2012 to 2015, was the coordinator of ISHAM Cryptococcus working group. At present he coordinates the European research group SCREEN Project, that is involved in several research activities on Cryptococcus. His researches recently also focused on the environmental distribution of human fungal pathogens with the aim to understand the environmental factors influencing their distribution and to identify geographical areas with high risk of contact.
Little is known about fungal communities, including fungal pathogens, in sand and coastal waters along seas, lakes, and rivers, which represent important ecosystems interacting with human activities. Analysis using a spatial distribution modelling approach showed how molds and yeasts are differently distributed along coasts in relation to different environmental factors.
